Calm Chess

· 2 min read

Most chess apps feel loud. There are timers, ratings, streaks and a badge for every notification. That works if you already play. When you’re learning, it’s a lot.

Calm Chess is built for the second case. It doesn’t rush you, and it helps you see what’s happening on the board.

A coach after every move

After each move, the coach tells you whether it was great, good or a slip, and why, in one short sentence. If you’re stuck, ask for a hint. If you make a mistake, undo it and try again. You can also step back through a finished game to see where it turned.

Opponents that grow with you

You start against the Rookie, who you can beat in your first game. Win three games and the Master unlocks, then the Grandmaster. If a friend is next to you, pass the phone and play each other.

Seeing the board

Lines of light show where a piece can go. Hold a piece to see what guards it and what attacks it. While the engine thinks, its candidate moves appear on the board, so you can watch it weigh its options.

Private and offline

There’s no account and there are no ads. The engine runs on your phone, so Calm Chess works on a plane, and your game is saved on the device where you left it.

Three languages

Calm Chess speaks English, Hindi and Spanish. Hindi came early because, by Google Trends, interest in chess is higher in India than in the United States.

When you can play

Calm Chess is coming to the App Store and Google Play.
