Einbürgerungstest: Leben in DE

· 2 min read

To become a German citizen, or to settle in Germany for good, most people take the “Leben in Deutschland” test: 33 questions about law, history and everyday life, drawn from an official catalogue of 310. You need 17 right to pass.

Most of the people taking it are still learning German. Most of the apps for it are full of ads, or let you take one practice test before asking for a weekly subscription. Einbürgerungstest: Leben in DE is free, has no ads and needs no account.

German first, your language underneath

Every question appears in German, exactly as in the test, because that is how you will read it on the day. Underneath, the same question in your own language, in one of 20: English, Ukrainian, Russian, Turkish, Arabic, Persian, Polish, Romanian, Bulgarian, Greek, Italian, Albanian, Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Hindi, Urdu, Vietnamese and Chinese. Tap any German word to see it on its own, and have any question read aloud in German.

Where you stand today

Home shows the score you would most likely get if you took the test today, on the test’s own scale of 33 with the pass mark at 17. Under it are your 310 questions: the ones you know, the ones you are learning and the ones to look at again.

Practice comes five questions at a time. A question you get wrong comes back until you get it right twice in a row.

The real format

A mock test is 33 questions in 60 minutes, with no answers shown until you hand it in, just like the real thing. Every test you take is kept, so you can watch your score climb past the pass mark.

Answers you can trust

The official catalogue lists the questions and the choices but does not mark the right answers. Every answer in the app was checked against independent sources, every disagreement by hand, and every picture question against its picture.

Private and offline

There is no account and nothing to sign in to. Your progress stays on your phone, and the app works without an internet connection. It runs on iPhone and iPad.

The questions come from the catalogue published by the Bundesamt für Migration und Flüchtlinge (BAMF). The app is independent and not affiliated with BAMF or any German authority.

When you can use it

Einbürgerungstest: Leben in DE is coming to the App Store.
